Dreamclinic Massage to Offer Service at Seattle University

Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dreamclinic Massage Now Offering Service at Seattle University

SEATTLE, WA January 7, 2016 — Dreamclinic Massage has announced it will begin massage services on Seattle University’s campus in January 2016 for their faculty, staff and students.

Seattle University discovered that stress levels among students are climbing.  Students have a heightened demand for excellence in today’s competitive market.  It is a rough economic climate causing difficulty securing financial independence. College students are more stressed out than ever before — at least according to the latest findings of a large, national survey that has been conducted annually for the last 25 years. The survey includes more than 200,000 students attending nearly 300 colleges and asks them to rate how their own mental health stacks up with their classmates.  The most recent results indicate that fewer and fewer freshmen feel like they are in top form in terms of coping with stress.

Helping students alleviate stress has become a primary focus for Seattle University. As a result, starting in 2016, Seattle University is offering massage services on its campus for faculty, staff and students. Regular massage is an excellent method for combating the effects of stress and enhancing one’s health. Reducing one’s stress response not only feels good at the time, it improves one’s ability to focus and be successful academically. Not only does massage feel fantastic, it is also fantastic for your health!

Many businesses have already adopted workplace massage, seeing its benefits of reducing stress and improving productivity for employees.  Colleges are now realizing those same benefits apply to their students’ overall health and well-being. Seattle University chose Dreamclinic for its on-campus seated massage based on its standing as the leading provider of therapeutic massage services in the region. Dreamclinic is offering massage services at select dorm locations on the Seattle University campus as of January 2016.

Massage for Today’s Stressed Student

Seattle University Massage DreamclinicCollege students are more stressed out than ever before — at least according to the latest findings of a large, national survey that has been conducted annually for the last 25 years. The survey includes more than 200,000 students attending nearly 300 colleges and asks them to rate how their own mental health stacks up with their classmates.  The most recent results indicate that fewer and fewer freshmen feel like they are in top form in terms of coping with stress.

We all know what causes stress and we all know that stress is bad for you. What is less well-known is exactly how stress affects your body and how massage reverses the physiological effects of stress.  Stress remains in our bodies causing muscle tightness, high blood pressure, and a sense of fatigue. Prolonged stress wears down the immune system and leads to illness in various forms.Over the long-term muscles and blood vessels become less elastic, arteries develop cholesterol plaques, digestion becomes sluggish, and sleep doesn’t feel refreshing. We find it difficult to ever fully relax even after exercise.

Massage for today’s stressed student acts as a natural bio-feedback mechanism. With regular massage, our bodies learn how to return to the “rest and digest” state with more ease. We are less likely to get stuck in the “fight or flight” stress reaction. Hence, we actually learn to deal better with stress on a physiological and psychological level. Regular massage is an excellent method for combating the effects of stress and enhancing one’s health. Reducing one’s stress response not only feels good at the time, it improves one’s ability to focus and be successful academically. Not only does massage feel fantastic, it is also fantastic for your health!

Learn and Grow Your Massage Practice in 2016

A new year with a new calendar makes for a new chance to grow in your practice. As 2015 winds down, it offers all of us an opportunity to look back over the year and take stock of what we have accomplished, where our challenges lie, and how we can improve over the coming year.
Sure, we all know that we want to be good at our job—not to mention successful. But, what does that mean for you? Take a few minutes to consider the quality of your clients’ experience at your hands, and see if some goals or resolutions for 2016 reveal themselves.

Of course, you’ll want to consider the quality of massage that you offer:
• Beginning with the first touch
• Massaging the full muscle
• Setting the right speed
• Keeping your skills fresh

Beyond your touch, there’s your massage space and the feeling & atmosphere that you create:
• Maintaining your massage room
• Managing music

The empathy you give and your clients’ sense of connection with you are part of it, too:
• Empowering client communication
• Creating space for clients to speak up
• Clarifying their real needs
• Even on bad days

All of those, together with getting great results for your clients and having a positive effect on their well-being, contribute to a sense of being “good” at what you do. Being “successful” can be as simple as enjoying that effect, knowing that you’ve benefited your clients. It can also be a matter of keeping busy and growing your clientele so that you get to keep enjoying having that kind of positive influence on people’s lives:
• Inviting clients to return
• Seeking referrals

However you choose to measure your performance and satisfaction, we hope these best practices, shared courtesy of Dreamclinic Massage, will present new opportunities for growth and development in 2016.

Supporting Your Massage Clients Into the New Year

With that introspective time of year right around the corner, your clients likely have their New Year’s Resolutions on their minds. Those resolutions can include everything from flossing more to working harder to seeing more of the world. New resolve to eat a healthier diet or to exercise regularly is somehow easier to summon as the calendar flips. As massage therapists, we’re in a unique position to support our clients in these efforts.

So many aspects of well-being come together on the massage table: stiffness & aches are worked out; old toxins are dislodged from their hiding places; and stress & tension melt away. What better way to buoy up one’s efforts at increased health & well-being?

This is a wonderful time for you to offer to be an ongoing source of support and encouragement for your clients as they live into the new year and their newly chosen good habits. By booking them for a regular massage appointment, you can help them hold the space for those resolutions. Follow these easy steps to engage with your clients about their goals for the new year:

  1. Inquire – Find out whether your client has resolutions in mind that include their health and well-being by asking and listening. Even if they haven’t made specific goals, a statement like “Ugh, I know I need to take better care of my body!” reveals their underlying desire to do something.
  2. Invite – Tell them you’d love to be a source of ongoing support as they make these positive changes and that you’d be happy to book a regular appointment for them so they know that they have at least that one good thing for themselves set.
  3. Ask – Ask if it’s ok to give them some encouragement through a call, a text, or an email if you haven’t heard from then for a while in the new year.
  4. Follow up – Keep a list of the clients interested in ongoing massage care being part of their lives, check it against your calendar regularly, and reach out to anyone you haven’t heard from in a month and a half, or so.

How clients choose to improve their well-being is as unique as each person choosing. Whatever your clients choose, you can be there with them in the coming year.

FUN FACTS

Bob Hope lived to be 100 years young, and is believed to have had therapeutic massage daily as part of his healthy regimen.

Massage During Pregnancy

Massage benefits pregnant women in numerous ways. It can decrease tension, increase circulation, reduce swelling of ankles and feet, and relieve low back pain, which the majority of pregnant women suffer from during gestation. Women who receive pregnancy massage recline on their back or their side, rather than the traditional face-down position. Often therapists will employ cushions or pillows to ensure a comfortable and safe massage session.

“I love the fact there are two people I’m massaging and not just one,” said Ashley Sacco, a Dreamclinic massage practitioner.

Studies indicate that massage during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve  labor outcomes and newborn health.

Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered when massage therapy is introduced as part of women’s prenatal care. It leads to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health. In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol (hormones associated with stress) were reduced, and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression).

These changes in hormone levels also led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications, such as low birth weight. The cumulative evidence strongly suggests there are maternal and newborn health benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care.

Sciatic nerve pain is commonly experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. The pressure of the uterus spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves. Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles. Many women have experienced a significant reduction in sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy through massage.

Massage for Treating Stress

dreamclinic massageMost of us have stress in our lives, whether due to work, family or general environment. For some the stress may cause sleeplessness, anxiety, hypertension or depression. For many the stress leads to muscle soreness somewhere in the body – the shoulders, neck, legs, or back.

Whatever form the stress manifests in, can become an incessant low or medium-grade condition that puts a damper on our every day lives and sense of well-being.  At its extreme, chronic stress wears down our immune system and adrenal function, causing onset of illness and serious medical conditions. Some individuals use exercise to relieve stress but many do nothing. They just live with the aches and pain, blocking out the discomfort they feel. The problem with this approach is that with time our aches and pain only increase, depriving us of health and vitality.

Massage therapy can be used to treat most common conditions related to stress and muscle tension. Massage has both psychological and physiological effects. It can be used to treat specific ailments or injuries and is also used for general relaxation and emotional calm. Massage is beneficial for those experiencing headaches, arthritis, insomnia, asthma, digestive disorders, constipation, carpal tunnel syndrome, sinusitis, and minor aches and pains. Those taking prescriptions for the above and related conditions will find that massage can be a great compliment to or even an alternative for the medication. The long-term benefit of receiving regular massage is lower stress, greater energy levels, and an experience of overall greater health.

Below are the known effects of massage on the body:

    • Relieves muscle tension and stiffness

    • Reduces muscle spasms

    • Lowers blood pressure

    • Decreases stress and anxiety

    • Strengthens the immune system

    • Improves joint flexibility and range of motion

    • Speeds recovery from pulled muscles or sprained ligaments

    • Treats tension headaches and effects of eye-strain

    • Improves blood circulation and movement of lymph fluids

    • Improves posture

    • Relieves repetitive motion injuries

    • Enhances the health and nourishment of skin

  • Helps removal of metabolic wastes
