Brian E.
Bio
Brian was inspired to become a massage therapist after experiencing firsthand the effectiveness of body work in dealing with the aches and pains of being a mountain guide. He attended the Swedish Institute in New York City where he studied both western and eastern massage modalities, including shiatsu and Thai massage, as well as exercise physiology, becoming a NSCA certified personal trainer. His love of shiatsu led to studying acupuncture at the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine. Brian practices Japanese style acupuncture, western therapeutic massage, shiatsu, and Thai massage.
Highlights
In Japanese-style acupuncture, Brian stays with the client in the room for the entire treatment. Almost always, he uses one needle at a time, adjusting it in real-time as the patient responds. He relies heavily on palpation for assessment, determining a course of treatment, choosing points, and locating points.
The needles Brian uses are thinner and the depth of insertion more shallow than most other acupuncture treatments. This means that the treatment tends to be more subtle. Often the patient has little to no sensation with needling (everyone is different and some points are more sensitive or require a more tangible approach).
Japanese-style acupuncture can be a gentle introduction to acupuncture for those who are “needle nervous”. The combination of not being left alone, customization with palpation, only one needle at a time, and subtle needling all add up to a very adaptable, friendly 1st experience if a patient is unsure about trying acupuncture.
There are a wider range of tools and needle techniques used in Japanese-style acupuncture, many involving not inserting a needle at all. It is possible to do an entire treatment without inserting a needle if a potential patient is very unsure.
